Ending this Chapter.

I could now see why teaching is the greatest profession of all profession that exist in this world. Teaching is leading other people to greatness and betterment, it is to improve everyone’s lives.

It is Teaching that hones and gives direction to people, it is in teaching that we may know better than yesterday. In our history, all great and well-known people in our civilization has a teacher or is a teacher to begin with. They all encounter a teacher that grooms them to become who they are now.

It is a noble profession, it is not about fame, wealth and other materialistic things in this world. It is about sharing and kindness, teaching is about kindness to all. Embracing teaching is embodying kindness.

As teachers there are some duties that needs to be fulfilled, it is to continue in learning and also to deliver learning in a more efficient approach to the students.

From there, I know now that teaching is a calling, it is a profession beyond all profession, beyond being scientist.

Hey?!… What?! beyond being a scientist?!… Anyway I could do both…..

Science and Teaching πŸ™‚

They won’t have any conflict πŸ™‚

As both a scientist and a teacher could help the next generation and the future leaders of our country πŸ™‚

Being a Scholar.

Teacher’s are required to be creative, confident, and resourceful. This is to address the diversity of students, because each student is different from one another, Teachers are required to be creative to address their diversity and to fit into their needs with the help of that creativity.

Teachers are also scholars of their content-subject. Engaging or participating in learning communities where other teachers are also involve is one part of being a Scholar in Teaching and Learning.

Figure 1. Monsieur d’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers.

All for one, One for all; this is the statement of the Three Musketeers which means that they are in one goal together and would be helping each other to achieve that goal. In teaching we are all musketeers of learners, we need to train and enhance ourselves to be a better educators. The question is where can we get these training? The training can be gained by asking a fellow educator to make a constructive criticism towards one’s practice. Like a boxer who needs someone to spar with so that they would know their progress, also like a fencer that needs someone to spar with to determine their dexterity, agility and their fighting style. Educator needs someone to spar with also or to ask for the perspective or preference of other educators to improve one’s practice.

Also by engaging into this scholarly activity, we could expand our creativity and gain confidence from the comments and suggestions of other educators. Wherein all of this works would benefit the Learners πŸ™‚

Figure 2. Isaac Newton’s Quote.

Sir Isaac Newton was a scholar of Math, Physics, Bible and other sciences. He says that he could see further by standing on the shoulders of giants. These giants are not literally giants but his colleagues in his field who are more experienced; without those giants he wouldn’t be the Sir Isaac Newton that we know. Therefore Sir Isaac Newton also participated in the learning communities together with his giant friends in science.

Educators must also learn from the more experienced Educators, that they could see further by standing on the shoulders of Giants. But one thing comes first, to be able to stand on the shoulder of those giants a scholar should be Humble to himself/herself that he/she knows nothing.

Continuity of Learning

As many have said learning doesn’t end inside the classroom. Learning is a continuous process, it can happen everyday, through observations and self-analysis we can learn from time to time.

Just like every profession, teachers are also required to learn more and further hone the practice of teaching. By joining CPD programs and PLCs, teachers could access more information and knowledge about pedagogy and also about the content they are professing. Through CPD they can also get motivation to try something new or allow other educators to review their performance or ask for suggestion coming from other more experienced educators. It is not bad to ask for critiques, wherein through critiques we could learn more or have a view in different perspective.

Through PLCs, we can be involved in a group of people with a common goal to improve one’s teaching performance. PLCs provides a lot of opportunity to hone an Educator.

Educators are the modern day Philosophers, they can form a discussion to test an idea and further learn or expand their understanding on something. It is beneficial to join PLCs because it provides you an opportunity to be surrounded by people who are more experienced and intellect. Allowing us to learn in from their perspective, from their knowledge and experience. The only capital that we need to do this is “HUMILITY”.

Figure 2. Sir Isaac Newton.

Sir Isaac Newton once said that he made it through with the help of giants, who are these giants? It can be his colleagues, friends or more experienced scientist than him, through them he became the Sir Isaac Newton that we know.

But before we join CPDs and PLCs. It is important to have Humility, and that is the key to open the door of learning. Through humility, we could accept the fact the we are know nothing or if we know something that is only a tiny part of all the knowledge that weΒ  can learn from this world…

Past and Future Teaching

Before, my view towards teaching is that I need to find the most efficient approach to the learning of my students. Before I have no idea what constructivism is, all I know is that I have to show the process, allow them to do this and that so that they would realize that they are actually doing the concept being discussed.

Plato

Figure 1. Plato doing dialogue.

I start my class with dialogues, we discuss the previous lesson and I ask them questions which is relevant to the lesson. I also ask them of their realization towards the topic.

Tree

Figure 2. Tree of Knowledge

Then I would allow them to develop their own understanding towards the topic or concept. I also realized that whenever I am teaching, I am also learning. Whenever we had a class, Our Tree of Knowledge is growing.

Nowadays, that I am studying different contemporary approaches in teaching, I came to realize that I’ve been doing constructivism from the very beginning wherein it only started with the thought that I want them to get involve in learning, because that is what Plato and Socrates are doing, they involve students in learning and achieving higher understanding.

My perspective doesn’t change during my studies, It just improved and magnified my perspectives in teaching also aligned my goal in teaching. Among the contemporary approaches in teaching, I really want to apply constructivism and the involvement of social interaction in learning because it suits the subjects I am teaching, which is science. In science we often do laboratory and field works where the students would always be involved.

However, I won’t stick in one contemporary approaches in teaching because every student is different from one another, I would often reflect after applying an approach so that I would know what approach is effective for them or what approach suits them.

Different contemporary approaches in teaching will serve as my weapons and arms in honing their wholeness. Because I won’t only be dealing with their intellects, but also in their social and emotional assets also with the main goal of honing the future leaders of this country.

BIO-EINSTEIN-TONGUE

Figure 3. Einstein

Albert Einstein aside from being a Physicist, he is also a Professor, a teacher…

According to his theory of relativity, time and space is relative and are connected with each other.

So as the teacher and his students

I’ll be the teacher, also a molecular biologist who could relatively connect with my students πŸ™‚

Teaching Knowledge and Technology

Being a teacher has a lot of responsibilities.

A teacher should have a level of mastery about his or her subject. Because if a teacher lacks in mastery of the subject, a teacher would have a problem imparting knowledge of that subject to the students.

Now in terms of imparting knowledge, a teacher must different teaching style and approaches for him or her to impart knowledge efficiently. If the subject requires practice then the teacher must engage his or her student in activities. If the subject requires visualization, the teacher must use technology or illustrations to allow the student to visualize what is being taught.

A teacher must also know his student and the learning environment, A teacher must know his or her students to further diagnose their needs, because every student has their own needs and proper treatment. A teacher must also learn of the students to know their situation and would probably help in giving assessment on the students. Learning environment must also be checked to know what kind of society, the students are into. Learning the environment would also make the learning process efficient as the teacher would know where can all this knowledge can be applied and seen in real life.

Educational ends, teacher should know the purpose of his or her teachings, and that is to make the students better citizen and future leaders.

Innovation and technological knowledge, learning can also be applied with technology to aid the students in learning, in the past centuries, we use the traditional books and pens to learn. But with the developing technology we could now use computer generated graphic designs, letting the students visualize the things being taught, or we could simply use statistical software wherein it could make statistical analysis faster showing the relationship or variables in an instance.

Through Technology we could also use simulators to learn the more practical knowledge such as flying an airplane, maneuvering spacecrafts and others.

Teaching would never be the same in the last centuries, it would be more advance as technology develops.

Who knows we could learn physics in a matrix-like computer generated world.

Professional Teacher

Before I do believe that Professionalism means you are paid for what you are doing. However, that is not the exact meaning of professionalism. Upon studying the modules, I learned that a Professional should have AUTONOMY towards his/her profession. In the case of Teachers since they have supervisors or school head, they somehow appear semi-professional due to lack of AUTONOMY. If we are going to look at it closely, Teachers are still Professional because they are paid for what they are doing and has autonomy towards their teaching style. Yes, they might have supervisors or department heads but inside the classroom teachers they have AUTONOMY.

In the future, I want to be a teacher who won’t stop expanding his knowledge, who’ll have collaboration research, open minded for suggestion and changes, and have AUTONOMY.

I will be a teacher who will hold onto his Honor and Conviction to guide the new generations.

Apply Critical Reflection in Teaching

Before, I often do reflection towards my teaching strategy and style, if it isn’t working then I’ll put some revisions. During those days I didn’t knew that, what I am exactly doing is reflecting. During high school we often do reflection after the gospel taught to us by our catechist, and taught me the meaning of reflection is by simply relating to a past experience or scenario.Β  However the definition of reflection is deeper than that. Reflection when mastered could actually help you improve your craft, strategy, and skills. Reflection is not simply having a thought of why did I do that or why did it happen.

After studying the modules, I learned that self-reflection isn’t enough or even unreliable, there should be more evidences than from yourself. Evidences can be gathered through your autobiography, opinion of your students, comments of your colleagues and the theories or guidelines that you have learned. Reflecting only by yourself is dangerous, it could render you blind.

Reflection is also connected to our mastery of our skills, such as your ability to swim. Everything undergoes the process of learning and development and reflection is a key to progressive learning. As we reflect we became conscious of our competency andΒ  we tend to polish or do something about our incompetency.

My assumption before I read the module is causal, easily uncovered common definition of reflection. However as I read the module, I tend to have a prescriptive to paradigmatic assumption. I could now determine the type of assumption and apply the lenses. Understood and discuss the relationship of Reflection to learning and teaching.

Through critical reflection a teacher could avoid hegemonic assumption. Which degrades the quality of education that a teacher could give.

Through reflection we could make better decisions and avoid repeating our past mistakes.

reflection is a continuous cycle of refining our decisions, actions and thinking.gibbs

Figure 1. Gibb’s Cycle of Reflection.

In Figure 1. we can see that reflection has a process. The process could help us do the right thing and avoid errors.
